Eleanor (Smith) Swartz

January 7, 1919 — March 30, 2014

Eleanor (Smith) Swartz, 95, formerly a resident of Nanty Glo, passed away March 30, 2014, surrounded by her family at Richland Woods. Born Jan. 7, 1919, in Wehrum, Pa., daughter of the late John M. and Mary E. (Donahue) Smith. Eleanor was preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Melvin Lee Swartz Sr.; sisters, Mary Cramer, Anna Sharp, Catherine Johnson, Rebecca Jane Wood, Hazel Holupka and Patricia Rebold; and brothers, John Smith and William Smith. Survived by sister, Elsie Turous; sisters-in-law, Margaret Smith, Nancy Smith, Mary Ann Smith and Dorothy Krobath; brother-in-law, Ralph Swartz; and many nieces and nephews. She was a loving mother to Melvin Lee (Judith Shultz) Swartz Jr., Bellaire, Ohio; and Patti Swartz (Michael) Noel, Johnstown. Grandma "Slaughter" will be sadly missed by grandchildren, Abraham (Leah) Noel, Amanda (Jason) Hanson, Matthew (Rayna) Noel, Kathleen (Patrick) Zink, Rebecca (Donald) Frischkorn, Elizabeth Eleanor Swartz and Martin Swartz; and great-grandchildren, Phoebe and Julia Noel; Ava and Claire Hanson; Lyra and Olivia Noel; Eli, Sarah and Andrew Zink; and Brady and Bryce Frischkorn. Eleanor, an outgoing homemaker, was a talented cook, baker, seamstress and crafter, who enjoyed being around her family and friends. She always had a smile on her face and looked after the welfare of others. She was a longtime member of "The Club," at which her friends shared new projects (especially candy making), food and activities. Friends and family will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 4, at Bowser-Ondriezek Funeral Home, Nanty Glo. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5, by Father Voytek, at St. Mary's Church, Nanty Glo, where she was a lifelong member. Interment, Holy Name Mausoleum. A special thanks to her dear Nanty Glo friends and neighbors, who enabled her to stay in her beloved home for so long, and to the gentle, caring staff at Richland Woods and Medi-Hospice. Contributions may be made in her memory to St. Mary's Church.
